As the leader of the artillery team, or forward observers, Monti was second in command. Under the command of Sergeant Lybert, Monti’s 16 man unit was tasked with providing intel to Americans in the valley below. SFC Monti was part of Task Force Spartan in Gowardesh, Afghanistan.
